UNIT HISTORY:
Recently redesignated as Charlie Company, 1/143rd Infantry, the organization was formerly the 173rd Infantry Detachment. The detachment started out its existence as the Scout Platoon, Troop D, 1/26th Cavalry. When Troop D was reorganized in October, 1986 the scout platoon was no longer required and subsequently reformed into a long range surveillance detachment. The split from Troop D officially made this a new unit which does not share history from Troop D. This unit’s first assignment continued with the 1st Squadron, 26th Cavalry Regiment. As the 173rd LRS, this unit spent 11 months in Iraq attached to the 1st Brigade Combat Team in the 3rd Infantry Division supporting Task Force Raider. While there, they performed their jobs as desired and finished their tour returning home to Rhode Island safely.
The 143rd Infantry was reconstituted in the Texas National Guard on 1 September 2009. By 2011, the battalion had been reformed with companies in Texas, Alaska, and the Rhode Island National Guard. The 143rd was mobilized the day after Thanksgiving in 2011. It conducted mobilization training at Camp Atterbury, Indiana and deployed to Afghanistan in February 2012 to conduct missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The primary mission of the 143rd was service as security forces (SECFOR) for Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) throughout the country. Headquarters and Headquarters Company was assigned to the capital city, Kabul helping to secure and manage the operation of multiple bases in the area. Today, the citizen soldiers of Company C, 1/143rd Infantry (Airborne), Rhode Island Army National Guard, continue to carry on the proud traditions of their forefathers and stand ready to answer the call to defend the nation or provide emergency services to the State of Rhode Island and its residents.
