As the 173rd LRS, this unit spent 11 months in Iraq attached to the 1st Brigade Combat Team in the 3rd Infantry Division supporting Task Force Raider. While there, they performed their jobs as desired and finished their tour returning home to Rhode Island safely. The 143rd Infantry was reconstituted in the Texas National Guard on 1 September 2009. By 2011, the battalion had been reformed with companies in Texas, Alaska, and the Rhode Island National Guard. The 143rd was mobilized the day after Thanksgiving in 2011.
